:-)Tomorrow we begin the final week of recordings for the score to MARY POPPINS RETURNS. We recorded the songs for one week a year ago, then one week half a year ago for enough score to preview the movie and now another full week to complete the score. That is a LOT of recording, there is a LOT of music in this movie!
For Scott & I to get to write the songs for this film was a dream come true (the understatement of the century). For me to get to write approx 90 minutes of score in this style has been an unforgettable experience. Many directors have probably said to themselves "Why is this schmuck scoring my movie like it's a Mary Poppins movie?". Now I had a director saying "Yes, yes, yes!" Thank you Rob Marshall.
And speaking of thank you, thank you to my friend and agent Richard Kraft, who made sure I was on this movie. Knowing I would kill him if he didn't get me on the movie was probably a great motivator, but nonetheless, I am eternally grateful to him for the gig of a lifetime.
And thank you to The Sherman Brothers for making Mary Poppins the movie of my soul and who we honor now with every music and note.
I went and dug up this video I made a full year before there was even a whisper of Disney making a sequel to "Mary Poppins". I think it proves that Walt was on to something when he had them write "a dream is a wish your heart makes". This video must have been my version of Jane & Michael Banks' advert for "The Perfect Nanny", because it went up and out into the universe and made my dream come true.
