Scott & I first heard that we were up for the job of writing songs and score for a sequel to Mary Poppins on July 15th, 2015. And tonight, there is a huge World Premiere of the movie, less than half a block away from Grauman’s Chinese Theatre, where the first film premiered when I was 4.
I am going to do my damnedest to stay offline for the next few days, because tomorrow brings…the reviews! I KNOW how good the movie is, and I know how people who have been to screenings have been reacting to it, but it’s best for my late-in-life thin skin - not to mention my soul - to simply stay away from the printed word, whether on newsprint or online.
And I’ll be oh so happy to NOT HAVE ANYONE POST ANYTHING ON MY PAGE or fall into the misguided trap of posting “I don’t care WHAT they say, I loved your work!”, which has been obliviously said to me (and others like me) more than you could imagine.
The only review or prize that means anything - outside the opportunity itself - is that Richard Sherman (he of The Sherman Brothers) loves what we have done, and has told us now on a number of occasions just that, last week directly to our faces, when Scott & I had the grand opportunity to sit with him for a filmed interview (we of him, he of us). To sit with one of the two songwriting deities who created the all-time great song score for an original movie was beyond surreal and so incredibly moving.
The Sherman Brothers (and arranger Irwin Kostal) were the masters who taught me everything I ever needed to know, and Mary Poppins Returns ended up being the perfect way to say thank you to them. It is our love letter to them. Here’s to Robert B., Richard M. and Irwin K, my teachers. And here’s to all of you still reading this and to all the great teachers who changed our lives.
Now…Let’s Go Fly A Kite!
x Marc
