Other Gear Freaks are looking at this product, too. So ask 'em questions. Give your insight. Get street cred.
This is great jacket at the price point. Lacks insulation, so I restrict it to mid-Fall/Spring. Runs a little small, so plan accordingly.
Great light soft shell. I used for layering while climbing. It has a decent stretch factor so it doesn't restrict arm movements. No insulation, but it's great as a very thing layer to give you a bit of warmth and block out wind.
i bought this jacket just cause i wanted a softshell that wasn't uber-expensive, and it suits me fine, i usually use it when its rainy but no too cold i really like he pocket on my chest it makes me feel like i can rule armies!
No insulation here, but it does a decent job of keeping the wind and water out, while maintaining great breathability. Besides on hikes, I've actually used it as a shell for my 8 mile bike ride to work in MA in the winter, and it's breathability is superb!
Kudos to Mountain Hardwear. Its very athletic in fit and feel. Moves with you, perfect for layering and as an all purpose. Decent at stopping the wind, but by no means a Windstopper. Lined chin is great especially with its extra little extension off of the top of the zip, adjustable cuffs are very nice too. Exactly what I wanted shopping for a lighter, durable, non-lined, versatile jacket. This thing will stand up to anything, and looks sharp too.
Nice jacket. I bought a medium. I am 6'1" tall/185 lbs.. It fits quite trim/athletic in the torso and is quite short (it ends right at the waistline). This is for easy fit while wearing a harness presumably. The arms are long and not so trim on me (maybe I'm just not "pumped up" enough! ;) I love it!
provides good protection against scraping on rock while climbing. pretty light soft shell. does not restrict movement.
I've had this shell for about a month now and I am very pleased with it. I have used it on several backcountry skiing days ranging from about 20 to 45 degrees and when biking and it has performed well. I typically wear it over 1-2 shirts depending on the temps. It also looks good enough to wear out when going out on the town. I like the athletic cut and the fabric can stretch a bit when needed. I'd say it's just OK on breathability, but I've found that I can unzip the large pockets and they help to shed the heat. The chest pocket is a good spot for my iPod and it does a good job of repelling wind and rain. I'd buy it again.
Great jacket, it keeps me warm in almost every situation if i just put something underneath it. The wind resistance is great and the flexibility is awesome.
Very pleased with this cheaper softshell, although I wish I had gone with The North Face Bionic Apex instead as it has a brushed fleece lining inside where this one has absolutely nothing. It's definitely not a cold weather jacket, there is no interior lining whatsoever. Best thing about it is it's fit, very performance oriented which is close and snug but still manages to not be restrictive. I do not regret buying it, but take a look at The North Face Bionic Apex if you prefer a brushed fleece lining
This is the best jacket I have ever purchased. It is lightweight and has a cool sleek style. I found this jacket to be very comfortable and breathable. It is great for cold, windy days. Looks great with jeans. I would stongly suggest buying this softshell jacket.
The jacket appears to be okay, however, the sizing runs a half to full size smaller than most.
I've been shopping for a softshell with the features and price that I wanted for over a year. This is a rock solid, reasonably lightweight jacket that can cross over from climbing, running, cycling, and just sporting around town. It’s really water resistant, and stops a reasonable amount of wind for its exceptional breathability. No insulation—the way I like it. High intensity work outs are "no sweat". If it gets cold just add a layer underneath. The jacket stretches just the right amount, has a trip fit, and doesn’t ride up when reaching overhead. Buy this jacket!
I bought this jacket for my husband as a non-tech jacket. He has other jackets that he wears for training, but since they are always in the running closet or on the drying rack, they are rarely in any condition to throw on over clean clothes. I was tired of him throwing on some cheap fleece to wear around while leaving his $100+ and $200+ softshells at home (albeit sweaty). As a result, I can only comment on the jacket from that standpoint. He's never run in it. I like the fact that it is windproof, yet very lightweight. Driving around in the car, he doesn't feel like he has on some big bulky outerwear, yet the jacket does a great job of shielding you from the wind and chill when outdoors. The pockets are great; the material is super and the fit is just right, it’s slim looking, yet roomy enough to fit over layers. If he were going to run in this, I'm sure he would be wanting pitzips, etc. The smooth fabric looks great, wipes off easily and yet somehow avoids that rubbery feel that so many softshells seem to have. All in all, I'd highly recommend this jacket, for the purpose I bought it for. I like the dark green color of the one I got. It looks great with jeans and/or black sweats on the way to the gym. I think the black would look great with jeans, but then would look dorky with black sweats, too "outfitty." It may be a great running jacket too, but he hasn't used it for that. I do suspect, though, that anything this windproof would need to have more venting to be a great running jacket.
A well made jacket, with nice athletic fit. It offers good wind resistance and water repellency, but a little light in the insulation department. It’s more of a softshell shell and not much else. Good for a cool day or night but that’s about it.
Great Soft Shell
This jacket is awesome! I was eyeing this jacket for more than 6 months because the price from last year in Canada ws rediculous (at $150). I saw the price from several places for lower than $80, but with shipping, these deals still had the jacket for over $100. So, when I did finally get a chance to get the jacket and received it from Altrec fairly fast, I was thrilled. What thrilled me even more was when I wore the jacket in cool weather from about 9C to about 20C. The jacket kept me warm from the wind and was quite breathable even when I wore it in 22C (it was hot, but the jacket did not collect any moisture). To top it off, the jacket does have stretch and comes with DWR that repels and beads water from rain. I usually wear a small, like for my MH G50; but for this jacket, since I had a chance to try a similar jacket in Canada, I knew that I had to get a medium size. The length was just perfect, an even better fit than my G50. The only knock against this jacket was that it did not have an inside chest pocket. But the outer left chest pocket made up for it. The jacket looks awesome on a fit body. I definitely recommend this jacket for anyone who is looking for a light outer shell that can be used for all sorts of activities. The material is made to withstand rough surfaces.
Better then North Face Apex Bionic
I bought this jacket instead of the North Face Apex Bionic, about 2 days afterbuying this one i saw a really good deal on the Apex so i bought that one as well. I had been wearing the North Face and found some things i did not like about it, The Offwidth has a way better fit, it also breathes better. My neck stays very warm with the offwidth where as the Apex the neck does not go up as high so you feel the wind more. The Offwidth seems lighter and would pack down smaller, also the adjustable cuffs are better then the Apex as it does not have any. Some people like the fact that the Apex has a thin lining, it is not that great and does not keep you any warmer. In cool conditions you would want to have a fleece on anyways so the lining in the North Face would not really make you any warmer. It is snowign today and i was out in the offwidth with a sweater and was perfectly warm. The Offwidth is great, anyone want to buy a North Face Apex????
