Working with Marco and Marcus has been a very emotional experience. I think this was the first time I have realized it was possible to direct composers exactly like directing actors. I would talk about the scene, the motivation and the emotion of the character justas I would do with an actor.

I remember an anecdote, we were at Marco's studio, listening to the various music proposals for "The Letter of Roxane" sequence. I was rejecting everything, and Marcus asked me to be more specific about the meaning of the scene.

Marco was on my right, sitting on a chair with his eyes closed. I finished my explanations.

Marco got up to the piano.

Marcus played images from the film as Marco improvised a melody.

From the first notes, I knew it was the emotion I wanted. I watched the scene on the monitor, it was perfect and the music fitted exactly with my images.

I watched Marco, his eyes were closed. He was feeling the scene, its meaning, its timing, without looking at the screen.

After MESRINE, THE EMPEROR OF PARIS is my second collaboration with them and I would be honored to have others like this, many others.

As with our
past collaborations Instinct of Death and Public Enemy No 1, getting
to work on a new Jean-Francois Richet project is always an absolute
delight. He is a confident director with a strong vision who doesn't
have to rely on the soundtrack to cover something that was missing
in the film's production or provide background filler to keep the
audience's attention. Instead, music is spotted sparsely and placed
carefully. It always has a clear and focused point of view and its
sole purpose is to provide the emotional layer that supports the
actors' superb performances as well as the breathtaking
cinematography. There are long stretches in this film that do not
have any underscore in which the audience faces the brutal realism
of the rather harsh and tumultuous times after the French
Revolution. Once the music comes in, its impact is supposed to be
meaningful and amotional. For us, this was a welcome change from the
usual fare, but it came with its own set of challenges.
Our first step was to come up with
thematic material that could be developed and then put them against
various scenes. Jean-Francois was very vocal about whether he felt
our ideas were right or wrong - he treats his audience with the
utmost respect and doesn't want to overstate musical moments. They
had to be simple, yet grand. Sometimes intimate, sometimes epic, but
overall the music had to create a much bigger arch. There is nothing
greater than hearing the excitment in his voice when the cue is
cracked, and he tells you about what he "discovered" and what made
him feel like. Recording in France
was a wonderful as we remembered from our past experiences. The
Parisian musicians are top notch professionals who play beautifully
as an ensemble and worked very hard to master specific difficulties.
"Under Arrest" was an example of a cue that required very precise
solo work and the section leaders simply killed it! Thanks to Anne
Gravoin, who put together such a wonderful group of musicians for
us. They were on point, understood what we were going for and gave
the music its heart and soul. As an added benefit to this trip, we
had a great team to work with - our recording engineer Patrice Kung
has great ears made the mix one of the simplest we've done. Our
score coordinator Varda Kakon was a great host and helped make the
entire experience a time to remember. Thanks for listening. We hope

"This was indeed a special one for us. What you hear is what we recorded, all of it… well… minus the rehearsal takes of course. This movie is VERY impressive and powerful on its own, even without music. JF Richet really wanted to bring in as little music as possible, yet when it comes in, it really needed to be powerful and emotional. The players were phenomenal, totally understood the impact the music is supposed to have within the context of the film, and as you can hear, they gave it their all."

To those concerned and supportive people inquiring about the impact of the fires on our family and my studio—

First of all, I apologize for not responding sooner—its been a hectic week since this monster began last thursday when I saw a little plume of smoke behind the mountain through the studio window and the internet said there was a 100 acre brush fire in the valley. Since then all hell broke loose and I watched through security cameras as the fire came right to the doorstep and Tom McCahon single handedly saved the guest house while his own home burned a few miles away. In fact, many of my neighbors lost their houses and are in a bad situation and it is with great humility that I express gratitude in saying that number one, our family is all safe, and two, the fire never breached the perimeter of my property. As the winds have now calmed and the fire is no longer close I think I can safely say we have escaped this one!
