THE JOURNEY OF NATTY GANN
Composed and Conducted by JAMES HORNER

INTRADA Special Collection Volume 103

James Horner's score to the Walt Disney Studios' film The Journey of Natty Gann was in high demand at the time of the film's release. While an album did not initially appear, thanks to the generous cooperation of the studio, Intrada is proud to present the first ever release of this beautiful, adventurous score. Set in Depression-era Chicago, The Journey of Natty Gann begins with union rabble-rouser Sol Gann (Ray Wise) trying to eke out a living for himself and his daughter Natty (Meredith Salenger). When the widower lands a rare job at a mill in Washington State, he has to leave quickly without his daughter and is unable to find Natty in time to say goodbye. Left with an overly strict caretaker, Natty escapes and begins her cross-country trek by hopping a freight train, where she meets many adventures and characters, including a traveling companion Harry (John Cusak) and a wolf, all in hope of finding her father.

For Natty Gann, Horner fashioned a gorgeous theme that all at once captures Natty's determined spirit, her sense of adventure, and her vulnerability -- first heard during the "Main Title." A secondary theme, which opens the "Main Title," captures the hard, trying atmosphere of the Great Depression, playing in stark contrast to Natty's theme which seems to evoke hope for better times ahead. Other highlights of the score include "Freight Train," when Natty, Harry and the wolf hop a train. Horner starts slowly, musically building their approach to the train, but as the wolf is late, he must run fast and jump far to reach the train, making it just in time as Horner's score unleashes an exhilarating orchestral climax. "Rustling," is a Copland-esq piece for when Natty joins a gang of young rustlers trying to steal a bull and she is elected to enter the pen and lure the reluctant bull onto a truck. "Reunion" emotionally concludes the score, as Natty, nearly without any hope left, finally finds her father. Her theme swells and resolves, announcing the end of her adventure and her return to the home found only in her father's arms.

Although nearly 25 years old, James Horner's score to The Journey of Natty Gann remains one of his most beautiful and adventurous works. This premier CD release features a 33-minute album presentation Horner originally conceived, augmented with an additional suite of key tracks from the score.

This release is limited to 2500 copies.

SOMETHING WICKED THIS WAY COMES
Music Composed and Conducted by JAMES HORNER
INTRADA Special Collection Volume 95

The 1983 Walt Disney film of Ray Bradbury's Something Wicked This Way Comes is a dark journey into evil. It starts when Mr. Dark’s Pandemonium Carnival arrives -- a singular dark carnival that hears the pain within the townsfolk’s hearts. The carnival grants wishes and rectifies disappointment, but not without extracting a steep price. Teens Will Halloway and his kindred spirit Jim Nightshade hear the train carrying the carnival arrive in the middle of the night, and their natural curiosity leads them to discover the dark secrets within. Shortly thereafter, townsfolk begin to disappear . When Dark realizes the boys have learned too much and threaten his agenda, he begins a terrifying boyhunt that leads to a tense confrontation between Dark and Will's father Charles (Jason Robards) and a final, yet poetic, showdown in the carnival itself.

James Horner's score for Something Wicked This Way Comes has remained one of his most significant unreleased scores, and this premier release nearly coincides with the anniversary of the film's theatrical release in April 1983, some 26 years ago. The score opens with a malevolent theme, as images of a jet black train traveling in deep night invade the screen. As the credits end, the blackness and menacing music dissolve into a gorgeous autumn pastoral -- a lengthy sequence featuring a gorgeous, innocent theme, yet tinged with melancholy as the grown-up narrator reflects on this small town and a long ago experience. It's the feeling of nostalgia captured in music and is one of the many highlights of this powerful work. The score gets darker as the evil doings of the carnival unfold, and Horner's use of wordless female choir throughout gives an ethereal, supernatural, and downright sinister atmosphere to the events.

This release in dynamic stereo sound was prepared by Simon Rhodes from the original digital elements at Disney and was produced by Rhodes and James Horner. It has never sounded this good. This release is limited to 3000 copies and makes available one of James Horner's masterpieces at last!

HONEY, I SHRUNK THE KIDS
Music Composed and Conducted by JAMES HORNER
INTRADA Special Collection Volume 94

The 1989 Walt Disney film Honey, I Shrunk the Kids remains one of the most successful efforts to bring the classic Walt Disney brand of family adventure with humor, high-class production values and dazzling special effects, to modern audiences and modern sensibilities. Amateur scientist Wayne Szalinski (Rick Moranis) is in the midst of testing his shrinking machine, but can't quite get it to work. When a baseball accidentally gets lodged in the machine and activates the shrinking machine, the Szalinski kids and the next door neighbor's kids are reduced to a quarter of an inch in size and swept out into the garbage at the far end of the backyard. Trapped in a fantastic alien environment, the kids must stay alive and fight their way across the lawn while Wayne becomes aware of the problem and launches a desperate search for the children.

For this premiere release of Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, Simon Rhodes and James Horner produced a sparkling CD for Intrada from the original multi-track elements stored at Disney. Horner’s main title music is a nod to Raymond Scott’s 1937 “Powerhouse B” tune, often referenced in Carl Stalling’s Warner Bros. cartoon scores and a perfect accompaniment for the Rube Goldberg style contraptions of Wayne Szalinski. With a bright four-note motif for harp and plucked strings and jazzy accompaniment for saxophone suggestive of Nino Rota, as well as brash accents from brass and electric organ, Horner’s main title music underscores all the major moments involving Szalinski’s technology. With the main title tune covering most of the film’s comic moments, Horner was free to use straight dramatic scoring to address the bizarre miniature landscapes in which the four young heroes find themselves, with numerous evocative moments that utilize his trademark ethereal orchestrations, heretofore often employed to illustrate the vastness of space in scores like Aliens and Cocoon. Horner uses a warm long-line melody, often played by flutes of various kinds, for the relationships between the film’s young heroes and their growing bond both among themselves and, as the film moves on, with their environment. He also provides a playful theme first heard in “Ant Rodeo” as the children voraciously attack a giant cookie. This is developed in the Coplandesque material Horner wrote for the children riding the ant and is very subtly suggested during the otherwise violent and menacing music for the scorpion attack that the ant repulses, where he uses brushed low piano strings, snare and side drums, menacing horns and coiling low strings to underscore the assault by a blood red scorpion on the children’s nighttime Lego shelter, with heroic fanfares accompanying their ant companion’s counterattack and a delicate string elegy as the ant dies. It all ties together into a musical adventure as exciting and colorful as the film itself, and is a true gem from Disney's orchestral film music legacy.

This release is limited to 3000 copies.

Pt 2Ricardo Montalban, the Mexican-born actor who became a star in splashy MGM musicals and later as the wish-fulfilling Mr. Roarke in TV's "Fantasy Island," died Wednesday morning at his home, a city councilman said. He was 88.

Montalban's death was announced at a meeting of the city council by president Eric Garcetti, who represents the district where the actor lived. Garcetti did not give a cause of death.

"The Ricardo Montalban Theatre in my Council District -- where the next generations of performers participate in plays, musicals, and concerts -- stands as a fitting tribute to this consummate performer," Garcetti said later in a written statement.

Montalban had been a star in Mexican movies when MGM brought him to Hollywood in 1946. He was cast in the leading role opposite Esther Williams in "Fiesta." He also starred with the swimming beauty in "On an Island with You" and "Neptune's Daughter."

A later generation knew Montalban as the faintly mysterious, white-suited Mr. Roarke, who presided over an island resort where visitors were able to fulfill their lifelong dreams. "Fantasy Island" received high ratings for most of its 1978-1984 span on ABC television and still appears in reruns.

In a 1978 interview, he analyzed the series' success:

"What is appealing is the idea of attaining the unattainable and learning from it. Once you obtain a fantasy it becomes a reality, and that reality is not as exciting as your fantasy. Through the fantasies you learn to appreciate your own realities."
